Instructor of Early Childhood
Elia Spencer
Elia Spencer earned a bachelors in Public Health. She completed her Masters of Arts in Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Spencer became a National Board Certified Teacher in Special Education. At this time, Spencer is a candidate for her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction as well as earning a second Masters in Administration.
Spencer began her career in public health and those experiences led to an interest in the field of education. Upon completing her MEd, Spencer joined Winston Salem/Forsyth County schools as an Exceptional Children’s preschool teacher working with children with special needs between the ages of four and five years old. After getting to know her students and their needs, she seeked out additional training with TEACCH in order to better support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Conscious Discipline in order to better serve children through a social emotional lens. She then received training to become a Preschool Pyramid Model coach and began supporting others in delivering the highest quality environment and interactions to the students. Spencer then moved to the district level where she served as a social emotional support specialist for preschool teachers across the district. After having these opportunities, Spencer felt that a transition to a leadership position as a preschool coordinator for Surry County Schools would allow her to make the best use of her skills and knowledge. The opportunity to serve as an adjunct instructor for early childhood education with Surry Community College was accepted, which allowed Spencer to begin providing instruction to future educators. She is currently transitioning to McDowell Technical Community College where she will have the continued opportunity to support future educators interested in early childhood education.
Spencer has been published in the peer reviewed T-Care newsletter. Her interests include inclusive practices in early childhood education, social-emotional learning for children with special needs, and best practices in education.
